General Waste Collection Guidelines

  1. Collections take place on Fridays.
     
  2. In addition to garbage and recycling collection, a leaf vacuuming service is offered in the fall.
     
  3. The use of Veolia Environmental Services for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection is mandatory.

Garbage and Recycling Options

  1. Residents must select both a garbage cart and a recycling cart (there are two size choices for each).
    1. Garbage
      1. 65 gallon
      2. 90 gallon
    2. Recycling
      1. 35 gallon
      2. 65 gallon
    3. Dimensions and photos appear on the Winthrop Harbor website.
    4. All containers have a hinged lid and wheels.
    5. Examples are on display at Village Hall.
       
  2. Everyone will be billed for recycling.
    1. If you have never had recycling before, a list of recycling guidelines appears below.

Yardwaste and Leaf Collection Guidelines

  1. In addition to the vacuuming in Mid-October and November, there are two options for extended yardwaste collection from April-November.
    1. Yardwaste subscription service: You must call Veolia ES Customer Service group by May 13, 2005.
      1. You will be billed a one time fee of $40.24.
      2. Veolia ES will collect up to six yardwaste bags (brown paper), bundles of brush, or 32-gallon (or smaller) cans (or any combination of six bags/bundles/cans) of yardwaste per week.
    2. "Pay As You Throw" stickers
      1. If you do not subscribe to the yardwaste collection service, you can purchase stickers for $1.52 each and attach one to each bag, bundle or can when you need to dispose of yardwaste.
      2. Stickers are available at Village Hall, or Leader True Value and Ace Hardware stores in Zion.
         
  2. Curbside leaf vacuuming will take place from mid-October through the end of November.
    1. Residents must rake their leaves to within 2 - 3 feet of the street/curb (NOT IN THE STREET!).
    2. Veolia ES will collect the leaves six times during these two months (not necessarily on Fridays).
    3. The cost of this service ($2.85 per month year-round) will be included in your bill.
    4. The Village requested this service as an alternative to burning.
       
  3. Garbage, Recycling, and Yardwaste collection services will occur on Fridays.
     
  4. The service day for leaf collection will vary based on the volume of leaves raked to the street that week.

Recycling Collection Guidelines

  1. There’s no need to sort recycling..
    1. All material may be combined in the new recycling carts.
       
  2. Recyclable Fiber / Paper Products
    1. Paper
      1. Newspapers with all ad inserts, office paper, computer paper, mail, envelopes, magazines, catalogs, and phone books.
    2. Chipboard and Paperboard
      1. Flatten and remove windows, liners and handles.
    3. Corrugated Cardboard
      1. Flatten and cut into pieces no larger than 2' x 2'.
      2. Large amounts should be bundled with string.
         
  3. Plastic, Cans & Glass
    1. All items must be rinsed for recycling.
      1. Food contaminated products will not be accepted
    2. Glass bottles and jars
      1. Clear, brown and green colors
      2. Discard caps and lids
    3. Cans
      1. Tin and bi-metal
    4. Aluminum
      1. Cans, foil and trays
    5. Plastic #1 through #7 and beverage rings
      1. Codes #1 through #5 and plastic beverage rings
      2. Discard caps from bottles
         
  4. Items we cannot collect
    1. Toys, wire hangers, metal parts, baby diapers, pizza boxes, plastic bags, styrofoam, packing peanuts, light bulbs, plate glass, Pyrex, ceramic glass, pesticide containers, or containers that contain oil or antifreeze.
    2. Food contaminated items will not be accepted.
    3. No #6 (polystyrene) or #7 plastics.
Holiday Schedule
  1. Veolia Environmental Services observes the following holidays.
    1. New Years Day
    2. Memorial Day
    3. Independence Day
    4. Labor Day
    5. Thanksgiving Day
    6. Christmas Day
       
  2. If your pick up day falls on or after one of the holidays listed, pick up will be delayed by one day.
     
  3. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, there will be no delay for residential service.
     
  4. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the holiday will be observed on Monday and collection will be delayed one day.
     
  5. Any other holidays do not affect your collection service.
     
  6. If your trash container is not out on the regular pick up day, Veolia ES will not go back to pick up your container.
    1. Residents will either have to wait until the next scheduled pick up day or set up an extra pick up with charges.
