General Waste Collection Guidelines
- Pick up Times
- Items must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on scheduled service day.
- Items cannot be placed at the curb before 5 p.m. the day
before.
Trash Collection Guidelines
- Service is limited to trash and building material within the one (1) 90-gallon cart provided by
Veolia Environmental Services.
- Lid must be able to close on the container.
- Carts too heavy to be serviced will not be emptied.
- Trash items that do not fit inside the cart, except for the 2 bulk items allowed, will not be picked up unless an extra pick up has been scheduled.
- Hazardous materials are not allowed.
- Call SWALCO @ 847-336-9340 for information on disposal.
- Bulk Items
- There is a limit of two (2) bulk items such as furniture, fixtures and carpet that may be placed at the curb on each service day.
- Items need to be less than 50 lbs.
- Carpet must be less than 6 feet long, rolled and tied with string, twine or duct tape.
- Extra Trash / Bulk Items / Building Materials
- Extra pick ups are provided at the resident's expense and must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance of pickup.
- There is a charge per cubic yard.
- If scheduled on a day different from the regular pick up day there will be a trip fee added.
- Paid by cash, check or credit card (Visa, Master Card or American Express).
- Special pick ups scheduled on same day after the driver has already been there will be charged a trip fee if the driver is able to return.
- Tire Pick up
- Four (4) times per year Veolia ES will arrange for pick up of automobile tires.
- Residents are limited to four (4) automobile tires off the rim per household per year.
- Residents will be notified of the tire pick up dates by newsletter from City of Waukegan.
- White Goods/Appliances
- Appliances such as a refrigerator, stove, water heater, washer and dryer, de-humidifier, air conditioner and similar appliances will be picked up at no charge.
- Resident must call Veolia ES by Tuesday 2 p.m. to schedule the pick up for Wednesday of that week.
- Items not at the curb will not be picked up.
- 90-Gallon Carts
- Residents that need more than one 90-gallon cart can go to the City Collectors office 847-360-0334 and purchase a sticker for $156.00.
- The sticker is good for one year and the cost will be prorated at $3.00 per week.
- Purchased stickers will then be placed on the additional 90-gallon cart delivered by
Veolia ES.
- Each year the sticker color will change so a new sticker will have to be purchased yearly.
- Missing, Stolen or Broken Carts
- Veolia ES will not replace missing or stolen carts.
- Broken carts due to overloading will not be replaced.
- Resident will have to purchase a replacement cart for $60.00 each.
Recycling Collection Guidelines
- Recycle bins are now obtained at Waukegan Public Works 847-360-0944.
- Residents cannot purchase or get replacements from ONYX.
- Please make sure recyclables are clean and empty.
- Do not place in plastic bags or recycle plastic bags.
- Mixed paper and newspaper must be placed in a brown paper bag or bundled with string or twine to prevent them from blowing.
- Bags and bundles should not be heavier than 50 lbs.
- All other recyclable items can be mixed together in the 18-gallon bin.
- Improperly prepared recyclables and non-recyclable items will not be picked up.
- A notice stating why the items were left behind will be provided.
- What Can Be Recycled
- PLASTICS: Marked with a recycle logo including # 1-7 beverage and laundry bottles.
- Excludes plastic grocery bags.
- LIDS MUST BE REMOVED.
- ALUMINUM: Food and beverage cans.
- BI-METALS: Such as all types of tin food and beverage containers.
- GLASS: All types of clear and colored bottles.
- LIDS MUST BE REMOVED.
- CARDBOARD: Such as corrugated cardboard, chip board and wet-strength cardboard (e.g. beverage containers, frozen food packaging) Juice boxes, paperboard (e.g. cereal boxes, snack boxes).
- WAX-COATED CARDBOARD IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
- Must be broken down into 2 feet x 2 feet pieces, tied with string or twine and each bundle not heavier than 50 pounds.
- Place bundle(s) next to, on top of or underneath the recycle bin.
- MIXED PAPER: Such as magazines, telephone books, catalogs, junk mail, computer paper, stationery, envelopes, bills, greeting cards, soft cover books and brown paper bags.
- Place in paper bag(s) or bundle with string or twine.
- Bags or bundles not heavier
than 50 pounds.
- Place bag(s) or bundle(s) next to, on top of or underneath the recycle bin.
- NEWSPAPER: Newspapers with inserts are acceptable.
- Place in paper bag(s) or bundle with string or twine.
- Bags or bundles not heavier than 50 pounds.
- Place bag(s) or bundle(s) next to, on top of or underneath the recycle bin.
- Items we cannot collect
- Metal or glass other than food and beverage containers.
- Broken glass, Window glass or Light bulbs.
- Plastic bags.
- Styrofoam.
- Tin foil.
- Paint.
- Coat hangers.
- Pizza cartons.
- Wrapping paper.
- Waxed cardboard.
- Diapers / Feminine products.
- Hard cover books (unless cover is removed.)
- Yardwaste.
Yardwaste Collection Guidelines
- Starting in mid March and running through mid December, residents may place yard waste at the curb on their normal pick up day.
- Twigs and branches with a maximum 2-inch diameter must be bundled with string or twine in lengths of five (5) feet or less, not heavier than 50 lbs. each and the bundle not bigger than an 18-inch diameter.
- Lawn clippings must be placed at the curb in biodegradable brown yard waste bags or in plastic 32-gallon or smaller containers clearly marked YARD WASTE ONLY or Y/W.
- Bags, cans and bundles must not exceed maximum weight of 50 lbs.
- Sod and dirt are not considered yard waste items.
- Christmas trees will be taken for two (2) weeks after Christmas only.
Holiday Schedule
- Veolia Environmental Services observes the following
holidays.
- New Years Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
- Depending on the holiday, and the day of the week on which
it falls, your collection may be delayed one day.
- Please contact Veolia ES at the phone number below for further information.
- Any other holidays do not affect the trash service.
- If trash is not out on regular pick up day for any other holiday,
Veolia ES will not go back to pick up trash.
- Resident will have to wait until the next scheduled pick up day or set up an extra pick up to be paid either cash, check or credit card (Visa, Master Card or American Express) at a rate of $11.00 per cubic yard plus a trip fee of $15.00.
