General Waste Collection Guidelines

  1. In 2007 the Village standardized the garbage and recycling containers.
    1. The new containers have wheels and hinged lids to reduce wind-blown debris while ensuring convenience for the user.
      1. The green containers are for garbage.
      2. The blue containers are for recycling.
    2. Veolia Environmental Services will not pick up items which are put out in the old blue recycling tubs.
       
  2. Garbage Collection Schedule
    1. The main garbage collection day for residents north of Highway 60 and in Grosse Pointe Circle and Grosse Pointe Village will be Tuesday.
    2. All other residents will be collected on Monday.
    3. Recycling and yard waste will also be collected on the scheduled trash service day.
      1. Residents may request a second garbage pick-up during the week.
        1. Monday will be collected again on Thursday
        2. Tuesday customers will be collected on Friday.
           
  3. Items awaiting collection should be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day.
    1. Please don?t put your items out before 5 p.m. the night before.
       

Solid Waste Collection Guidelines

  1. Construction Debris
    1. Call Veolia ES to schedule a pick up of construction debris.
      1. It is considered a special pick up and will be charged per cubic yard.
         
  2. White Goods/Appliances
    1. White goods (large appliances) are collected on Thursday of each week.
      1. Call Veolia ES by 2 p.m. the Tuesday before to schedule a pick up.
      2. There is a charge per item.
         
  3. Bulk Items
    1. One bulk item per week may be placed next to the garbage cart.
      1. This item cannot exceed 50 pounds.
    2. For additional items (such as couches, recliners, tables, etc.) there will be an additional charge.
       
  4. Items we cannot collect
    1. We cannot accept liquid waste, hazardous or special waste, dirt, stone, concrete, tires or compressed air tanks.

Recycling Collection Guidelines

  1. There?s no need to sort recycling.
    1. All material may be combined in the new recycling carts.
       
  2. Recyclable Fiber / Paper Products
    1. Paper
      1. Newspapers with all ad inserts, office paper, computer paper, mail, envelopes, magazines, catalogs, and phone books.
    2. Chipboard and Paperboard
      1. Flatten and remove windows, liners and handles.
    3. Corrugated Cardboard
      1. Flatten and cut into pieces no larger than 2' x 2'. Large amounts should be bundled with string.
         
  3. Plastic, Cans & Glass
    1. All items must be rinsed for recycling.
      1. Food contaminated products will not be accepted.
    2. Glass bottles and jars
      1. Clear, brown and green colors
    3. Cans: Tins and bi-metal
      1. No chemical solvents or pesticides
    4. Aluminum
      1. Cans, foil and trays
    5. Plastic #1 through #7 and beverage rings
      1. Codes #1 through #7 and plastic beverage rings.
      2. Discard caps from bottles.
      3. No bags or uncoded plastic items.
    6. Cartons
      1. Milk cartons and juice boxes
         
  4. Items we cannot collect
    1. Toys, wire hangers, metal parts, baby diapers, pizza boxes, plastic bags, Styrofoam, packing peanuts, light bulbs, plate glass, Pyrex, ceramic glass, pesticide containers, or containers that contain oil or antifreeze. Food contaminated items will not be accepted.
Yardwaste Collection Guidelines
  1. Yardwaste service runs from April 1 through November 30.
     
  2. You have two (2) options this year for your yardwaste needs.
    1. You may either subscribe for weekly pick up
    2. Or you may purchase yardwaste stickers on an as needed basis.
       
  3. To subscribe for weekly pick up you must call Veolia Environmental Services Customer Service by May 31.
    1. Only residents establishing new service will be allowed to sign up after that date.
       
  4. The 2008 rate for subscription customers is $5.42 per month.
    1. This will appear on your trash bill.
       
  5. There is a limit of six (6) bags/cans/bundles per week for subscribing customers.
    1. If there are more than six (6) bags/cans/bundles to be collected, the extras must have yardwaste stickers attached (see pricing and purchase points below) or they will not be removed from the curb.
       
  6. You may use kraft paper bags or yard waste containers of 34 gallons or smaller marked with an "X".
    1. These both have a weight limit of 50 pounds.
       
  7. If you have twigs and small branches you may bundle them with twine.
    1. Twine is biodegradable; plastic, nylon or wire isn't and shouldn't be used.
    2. Bundles can not exceed 4 feet in length with individual branches not exceeding 4 inches in diameter.
    3. Each bundle may not exceed 60 pounds.
       
  8. If you choose to purchase yardwaste stickers on a needed basis the cost is $1.95 per sticker.
    1. You may purchase them from the following places:
      1. Vernon Hills Village Hall 920 Evergreen Dr
      2. Sullivan Community Center 635 N. Aspen Dr
      3. Dominick's Finer Foods 290 Hawthorne Village Commons.
    2. You may also have them billed to your trash account by calling Veolia ES Customer Service.
      1. There is a 10 sticker minimum when ordering directly from Veolia ES.
         
    Holiday Schedule
    1. Veolia Environmental Services observes the following holidays.
      1. New Years Day
      2. Memorial Day
      3. Independence Day
      4. Labor Day
      5. Thanksgiving Day
      6. Christmas Day
         
    2. Depending on the holiday, and the day of the week on which it falls, your collection may be delayed one day.
